Hi I’m #DonNewkirk and this is my first YouTube Video upload.. Yes I got it done!! First I want to thank you for watching. I really over thought the whole process and was way too critical of myself but I thought “I’m here to share my knowledge so stop tripping!”
There are tons of YouTubers that teach music production and recording techniques so why listen to me? Well I think I have a unique perspective on the entire music industry. I got signed to Def Jam Records at the age of 20 and #Russell Simmons allowed me to write, produce and arrange my entire project! He even let me manage my project budget It was unheard of back in 1988 and was a serious responsibility on my shoulders but I got it done!
Since that time I’ve had numerous experiences in the game. I owned a recording studio in Jamaica Queens for 20 years which seriously sharpened my engineering skills and kept it in touch with the pulse of urban music over the years. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with several artists, some of which are my favorites like #LaurynHill
I’ve also maintained my lifelong friendship and musical working relationship with my Lord Brother for life super producer Prince Paul. He’s been a part of so many iconic Hip Hop projects from De La Soul, Stetsasonic, Gravediggaz and Handsome Boy Modeling School.. Too many to name!
Working with Prince Paul I’ve had the honor of working on many amazing projects as well with some heavyweight Music names Like George Clinton, Bernie Worrell, David Byrne from the Talking Heads, Nona Hendrix, De La Soul, Reggie Watts, Shock G from Digital Underground and the list goes on!
Also, Prince Paul, Ladybug Mecca and Rodrigo Brandao and I founded the group #BROOKZILL.
I’ve been wanting to start a YouTube Channel for a long time! Too long actually! Finally with the help of the 2020 Quarantine situation and a YouTube Influence Challenge by Sean Cannell from Think Media and Video Influencers, here I am! Well I’m getting the video uploaded long after the challenge but I’m glad I did it!
I’ll definitely be teaching, sharing and curating everything I’ve learned over the years in the #music industry. Everything from D.A.W tutorials and virtual instrument tutorials. Fundamentals of Synthesizer Programming, Music Business contract negotiations, etc. I’ll also be doing new and old gear reviews. I’m a gear head and computer music geek so I’m looking forward to that part! Hopefully, as the channel grows I will be able to get some sponsorships from manufacturers so I can bring you new gear reviews.
