Netflix reveals which of its shows will return before the end of 2024, including the highly anticipated Squid Game season 2. Upon its release in 2021, Squid Game season 1 became the most-watched show of all time on Netflix. Season 2 of the South Korean dystopian series and a reality TV spinoff were quickly greenlit. However, due to the Hollywood labor strikes last summer, countless Netflix projects experienced delays. The streamer has slowly been restoring some order to the release slate since the shakeup.

As reported by THR, Netflix has confirmed several titles coming in the second half of 2024, including Squid Game season 2. During the streamer’s first quarter earnings call, CEO Ted Sarandos promised a number of anticipated titles are on the horizon. The confirmed 2024 projects include: The Night Agent season 2, Cobra Kai season 6, Outer Banks season 4, Emily in Paris season 4, and season 2 of the Monster anthology series. New series American Primeval, Senna, and The Perfect Couple will also release before the end of 2024.

Is Netflix Moving Past Its Temporary Content Dip?

It is important to note that Squid Game season 2 and the other titles mentioned during the earnings call do not yet have official release dates. However, the announcement gives viewers a release window by confirming which shows will arrive this year. For shows like Cobra Kai, which is still currently filming its sixth season, many were expecting a 2025 return. The confirmation of these titles, in addition to shows with previously confirmed 2024 release dates, like The Umbrella Academy season 4, means Netflix’s fall and winter 2024 schedule will be jam-packed with premieres.

The news suggests Netflix could be moving past a noticeable dip in content that began last year. In 2024, most networks and streamers started the year with a dip in content due to the labor strikes, as numerous shows and movies had just begun production when the strikes brought the industry to a halt. The film industry was hit hard, with a lack of blockbusters expected to cost Hollywood $1 billion at the box office. Meanwhile, many of Netflix’s highly anticipated 2024 releases, such as Wednesday, Ginny & Georgia, and Stranger Things season 5, were pushed into 2025.

However, Netflix’s content actually dropped before 2024, as in 2023, the streamer released 130 fewer original projects than in 2022. Part of the drop was Netflix’s decision to cancel many shows for cost-cutting efforts. The initial drop wasn’t wholly temporary, as it signaled a move towards less scripted content to lower costs and deal with subscriber losses. The surge like Netflix is expected to see in late 2024 with the release of Squid Game and more may just be a temporary surge due to strike delays rather than an indication of Netflix ramping up its original content permanently.
