wraps up filming, and the news hints at a potentially darker tale with the introduction of Shadow.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler has confirmed filming has officially wrapped. Based on SEGA’s hit video game franchise, Fowler first brought the lightning-fast, anthropomorphic hedgehog to life in 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog. Grossing over $319 million at the worldwide box office, the success of the first movie would not only lead to additional sequels, but also an upcoming spinoff television series featuring Idris Elba’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 character Knuckles.

Taking to Twitter, Fowler shared a behind-the-scenes image of him confirming that filming on the Sonic the Hedgehog threequel has concluded.

In the image, the director can be seen holding a giant clapperboard featuring the character Shadow, who was first teased in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 post-credits scene. This latest announcement also follows on from franchise star James Marsden recently confirming that principal photography has concluded.

Sonic’s Latest Character Continues The Movies’ Journey Through Game Lore

The Sonic The Hedgehog Franchise Has Decades’ Worth Of Game Lore To Explore

Despite sharing much in common with his blue counterpart, Shadow the Hedgehog is notable in that his tragic origins and gloomy demeanor potentially hint at
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
being a much darker tale than the previous movies.

Originally created in the early 1990s as an answer to Nintendo’s best-selling Super Mario Bros. franchise, the original Sonic the Hedgehog game would lay the groundwork for what would eventually become an expansive game franchise that would introduce an enormous cast of characters over dozens of titles. While 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie would largely focus on the franchise’s earliest characters, namely Sonic himself and Jim Carrey’s Doctor Robotnik, the 2022 sequel would later introduce Knuckles the Echidna and Tails the twin-tailed fox.

By comparison, Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s latest character was a relatively late addition to the game series, first appearing 10 years after Sonic’s debut. First introduced in 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow was never intended to be a lasting character, and his first in-game appearance was also intended to be his last. However, the character’s brooding and mysterious demeanor quickly proved a hit with fans of the franchise, and he would later return in several games and even earned his own self-titled spinoff in 2005.

Despite sharing much in common with his blue counterpart, Shadow the Hedgehog is notable in that his tragic origins and gloomy demeanor potentially hint at Sonic the Hedgehog 3 being a much darker tale than the previous movies. Frequently clashing with Sonic’s irrepressible sense of optimism in the games, Shadow’s relationship with Sonic has often been likened to that of DC’s Batman and Superman. With this kind of dynamic in mind, it will be interesting to see how the pair’s relationship plays out in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
