Two metro teams raise Gold Ball for first time in 6A basketball state final

The Northwest Rankin boys and Germantown girls both win their first state title in school history in the 6A State finals Saturday night.The 6A state championship round was dominated by metro area teams at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson. Three out of the four squads to make it were from within the metro with Brandon facing Northwest Rankin for the boys championship and Germantown making it on the girls side. Tupelo was the only team to travel to “The Big House” from outside.Despite losing to the Bulldogs twice during the regular season, NWR jumped out to an early 20-7 lead and never let Brandon back within single digits to win the Gold Ball 66-52. Brendan brown was the game’s MVP with a game-high 20 points.Germantown lost in the state final in 2021 and were bumped from the tournament in the semis in 2022. The Mavericks and McDonald’s All-American Madison Booker finally broke through, beating Tupelo 64-43. Booker was the game’s MVP with a game-high 26 points.
