THE ROSS FAMILY DIDN’T THINK THEIR THANKSGIVING VACATION TO HAWAII WOULD TURN INTO A SIGHTSEEING OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME. YOU’LL NEVER FORGET IT. AND IT’S JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS YOU JUST COULDN’T LOOK AWAY. THEY JUST WANTED TO KEEP LOOKING AT IT. THIS IS THE VIEW FROM THEIR HOTEL. MORE THAN 50 MILES AWAY FROM MOUNT ULLOA. IN FACT, YOU CAN EVEN SEE THE GLOW OVER HIS SHOULDER IN OUR INTERVIEW. THE LAVA FLOW IS GETTING CLOSER TO A BUSY HIGHWAY THAT ATTENTION CREATED HEADACHES FOR STATE OFFICIALS BECAUSE OF SAFETY REASONS. THEY HAD TO PUT UP NO PARKING SIGNS. THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF CARS PARKED ON THE STREET JUST TO GET A GLIMPSE OF SOMETHING THAT, YOU KNOW, I’M SURE AROUND HERE TO HAVE HAPPENED VERY OFTEN. THE ROSS FAMILY IS HEADED BACK HOME TODAY. THEY SAY THIS IS A VACATION THEY’LL NEVER FORGET. SO WE WERE KIND OF LUCKY, ACTUALLY, TO BE ABLE TO BE HERE WHILE THIS IS ALL HAPPENING. NICOLE TAM KCCI 8 NEWS IOWA’S NEWS LEADER. WHILE THE LAVA FLOW IS SLOWLY MOVING CLOSER TO THAT ROAD, OFFICIALS SAY THERE’S NO IMMINENT THREAT TO ANY HOMES AT THIS POINT. WELL, IT’S NOT JUST ON A LOWER TWO VOLCANOES OR ERUPTING RIGHT NOW IN WHOLE HERE IN HAWAII. AND THAT IS VERY RARE. KELLAWAY AND 21 MILES AWAY FROM ON ALOHA. AND IT’S BEEN GOING ON FOR MORE THAN A YEAR NOW. BOTH ARE LOCATED IN HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK AND HAVE NOT ERUPTED SIMULTANEOUSLY SINCE 1984, WHICH JUST HAPPENS TO BE THE LAST TIME ON ALOHA ERUPTIVE PARK IS STILL OPEN RIGHT NOW AND VISITORS ARE CLAMORING FOR THE CHANCE TO SEE BOTH ERUPTIONS IN PERSON. WE HAD JUST LANDED AND MY SON FELT THE EARTHQUAKE AND HE SAID, I’M BEEN DRINKING. WE CAME HERE LAST FOUR YEARS AGO AND 2017 WAS REALLY EXCITING TO SEE THE CALDERON GOING AT NIGHT AND TO THIS WEEK. Family surprised by Mother Nature while on vacation in Hawaii

The Ross family didn’t think their Thanksgiving vacation would turn into a sightseeing opportunity of a lifetime.

A family from Iowa happened to be on vacation in Hawaii when the Mauna Loa eruption started.The Ross family didn’t think their Thanksgiving vacation to the islands would turn into a sightseeing opportunity of a lifetime. “You’ll never forget it. And it’s just one of those things. You just couldn’t look away. You just wanted to keep looking at it,” Perry Ross said. The lava flow is getting closer to a busy highway, and that created headaches for state officials who had to put up “no parking” signs for safety reasons.”There were hundreds of cars parked on the street just to get a glimpse of something that, you know, I’m sure around here doesn’t happen very often,” Ross said.The Ross family is headed back home Wednesday. They say this is a vacation they’ll never forget. “We’re kind of lucky, actually, just to be able to be here while this is all happening,” Ross said. While the flow is moving closer to a road, officials say there is no imminent threat to any homes right now.
