The mind-bending sci-fi series Beacon 23 returned to MGM+ for its second season in early 2024, but will the show be renewed for season 3? Based on the Hugh Howey novel of the same name, the story is set in the farthest expanse of the galaxy as a lonely lighthouse keeper is shocked to discover he has a passenger with mysterious motives. Besides the tense interpersonal struggle between the isolated and suspicious characters, there was more than meets to eye with the mysterious beacons, and the first season merely scratched the surface.

Reviews for both seasons of the MGM+ original have been somewhat lackluster, with many pointing out the shortcomings of the characters (via Rotten Tomatoes). Though season 2 has done little to address previous concerns, Beacon 23 is the type of ambitious sci-fi series that could blossom into a long-running hit. With a plethora of twists and turns across its first two seasons thus far, Beacon 23 could reinvent itself at any moment which is its strongest aspect. Though the show hasn’t been renewed yet, it may still be picked up for another season.

With the show’s season 2 premiere coming in early April 2024, it isn’t really surprising that Beacon 23 hasn’t earned a renewal order yet. However, the first two seasons of the Zak Penn-created series did practically air back-to-back, which may create an expectation for it to return quickly. If season 3 does get picked up, it probably won’t be as fast as its predecessors, and MGM+ will want to take a hard look at the numbers. Though the show has never been reviewed well, it is long-term viewership numbers that determine a streaming show’s fate.

Beacon 23 is an MGM+ exclusive, but the first season was also made available through Amazon Prime Video’s catalog, and that may give it a boost. Lesser-known streamers like MGM+ (formerly Epix) often create great original content, but they don’t have as large of a viewer base as the aforementioned Amazon platform. It could be that the back-to-back releases of seasons 1 and 2 was a strategy to hook viewers, and it might be successful enough to earn Beacon 23 a third season.

Though season 2 of Beacon 23 isn’t over yet, it isn’t hard to speculate about the basic framework of season 3. The show is known for its heady twists, and season 3 will likely be sent down a new course before all is said and done in the sophomore outing. However, season 3 will likely see more violent struggle between the anti-AI forces and those searching for a middle ground, and Halan will find himself trapped in the middle. Until season 2 concludes, details surrounding Beacon 23‘s story will remain as mysterious as the artifact at the center of the story.
