Residents seek help fixing ongoing erosion problems

People who live in Northeast Jackson’s White Oak Creek neighborhood want Hinds County supervisors to appropriate funds to fix erosion issues.They say it’s been happening for the past 20 years. High water is washing away land and loosening soil at the roots of some trees.The neighborhood is in Hinds County District 1, which is represented by Supervisor Robert Graham. He said the board originally voted to allocate $4 million to the subdivision to make repairs, but Supervisor Credell Calhoun reversed his vote.Calhoun said only $2 million is needed and the remaining $2 million would go to other water projects in the county.”There are other ways to come up with funds for erosion,” Calhoun said. “We have erosion problems all over the city. All over Jackson, all over West Jackson. We have erosion problems and are getting calls every day.”County leaders said the $4 million originally allocated for the project was awarded to the county by the state.
