Summary

  • 2024 looks to be a promising year for sci-fi movies, with book adaptations, video game adaptations, and the return of major franchises.
  • Some highly anticipated films include
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
    ,
    Alien: Romulus
    , and a prequel to
    A Quiet Place.
  • While some films have experienced delays due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, if everything goes as planned, 2024 could be one of the best years for sci-fi films.

Sci-fi movies make up one of Hollywood’s biggest markets, and there are many exciting releases to look forward to in 2024. The best sci-fi movies allow viewers to explore vast and imaginative worlds, providing a sense of escapism. 2023 saw several successful sci-fi movies debut, from franchise installments like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to the original film The Creator. 2024 will have an upward trend for the genre, with far more releases slated.

2024 will see book adaptations, video game adaptations, original sci-fi films, and the return of major franchises like Alien, Planet of the Apes, Godzilla, and Mad Max. These movies are set to be directed by some of the best talent in the film industry, including Denis Villeneuve. However, many 2024 movies have been delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. While hopefully many of 2024’s films are set now, it’s still possible they could be pushed back again. Nevertheless, if all goes as planned, 2024’s sci-fi lineup could make it one of the best years ever for sci-fi films.

9 Rebel Moon: Part 2 — The Scargiver

April 19, 2024

Zack Snyder has become one of the most popular directors in Hollywood in recent years. Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire was released on Netflix on December 22, 2023, and Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver will follow shortly after on April 19, 2024. Snyder’s original science-fiction epic has been highly anticipated, promising tons of action and a mature tone. Rebel Moon takes major inspiration from Star Wars, as well as classic samurai films like Seven Samurai. Though the first film received negative reviews, the completion of the story in part 2 could benefit the sci-fi series.

Zack Snyder has plans to release an R-rated extended cut of
Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire.

The cast of Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver includes Sofia Boutella as Kora/Arthelais, Djimon Hounsou as Titus, Ed Skrein as Atticus Noble, Michiel Huisman as Gunnar, Doona Bae as Nemesis, Ray Fisher as Darrian Bloodaxe, Charlie Hunnam as Kai, and Anthony Hopkins as the voice of Jimmy. One of the biggest complaints regarding the first film was that it spent too much time building its world instead of developing its characters. So, hopefully, the second movie will rectify that mistake.

8 Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes

May 10, 2024

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Release Date
May 10, 2024

Director
Wes Ball

Cast
Kevin Durand , Freya Allan , Peter Macon , Owen Teague , Eka Darville , Sara Wiseman , Neil Sandilands

While Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes film was a disaster, the 2010s reboot trilogy was a great success due to the direction of Matt Reeves. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes‘s story is a follow-up to War for the Planet of the Apes, and it will be the first film of a new trilogy. The movie will star Owen Teague as Cornelius, the son of Caesar, as well as The Witcher star Freya Allan.

Some speculate that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will involve space travel, but much is still unknown about the plot. Of course, the sci-fi film takes place 300 years after the events of 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes and features the bond between a chimpanzee named Noa and a human named Nova. However, fans will have to buy tickets to learn what stories unfold in the movie.

7 Furiosa

May 24, 2024

Mad Max: Fury Road was, undoubtedly, one of the best movies of the 2010s, as well as being a great reboot to George Miller’s classic sci-fi films. The primary difference between Fury Road and most reboots is that Miller himself returned to direct it. Thankfully, he’ll also be directing the prequel film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which will be released in May 2024. The spinoff follows Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa, the character Charlize Theron portrays in Fury Road.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
is set around 20 years before the events of
Mad Max: Fury Road
.

Aside from Taylor-Joy, the Furiosa cast includes Chris Hemsworth as Warlord Dementus, Tom Burke as Praetorian Jack, Lachy Hulme as Immortan Joe, and Nathan Jones as Rictus Erectus. The sci-fi film will have its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival a week before its theatrical release on May 15. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was initially supposed to premiere in 2023 but was pushed back due to the strikes.

6 A Quiet Place: Day One

June 28, 2024

A Quiet Place was a massively successful debut for John Krasinski as a writer and director, with both the movie and its sequel being commercial and critical successes. A Quiet Place: Day One is a prequel film led by Michael Sarnoski, who previously directed the film Pig. The prequel is set to star Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, and Djimon Hounsou. With the great talent involved, the franchise appears to be in safe hands as Krasinski takes a backseat as a producer (but he also co-wrote the story on which the screenplay is based).

John Krasinski is working on
A Quiet Place: Part III
, which is scheduled to premiere in 2025.

A Quiet Place: Day One‘s story revolves around (as the title suggests) the first day of the alien invasion in the A Quiet Place franchise. As mentioned above, the prequel will introduce new characters (with the exception of Djimon Hounsou as Henri). So, some characters may not survive the prequel since they weren’t seen in the original two films, or they could appear in A Quiet Place: Part III.

5 Transformers One

September 13, 2024

The Transformers franchise returned to theaters for the beginning of its new saga with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in 2023. While this series is set to continue, Transformers One is an animated prequel film exploring the relationship between Megatron and Optimus Prime in their early days on Cybertron. Brian Tyree Henry will play Megatron, and Chris Hemsworth will play Optimus Prime. Scarlett Johansson is also set to appear as the Transformer Elita, meaning the cast of Transformers One has multiple A-list stars.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
was intended to be the first installment in a new trilogy in the
Transformers
franchise.

Depending on how well Transformers One performs when it hits theaters in September 2024, it could be the beginning of a trilogy. Thankfully, Transformers One has an advantage over the franchise’s past films due to its impressive cast, which will likely draw many to the theaters. But only time will tell if the upcoming animated sci-fi movie lives up to the hype.

4 Borderlands

August 9, 2024

Borderlands

Release Date
August 9, 2024

Director
Eli Roth

Video game adaptations have become more popular in recent years, and the upcoming Borderlands movie will add another one to the list in 2024. Based on the massively popular game of the same name, the film is set to be a summer blockbuster, with Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis as a part of the Borderlands cast. Borderlands is a sci-fi action comedy movie, directed by Inglourious Basterds star Eli Roth.

The cast and crew filmed
Borderlands
in Budapest, Hungary, from April 2021 to June of the same year.

Borderlands‘s casting fixed one significant character flaw from the video games by giving the female characters a larger presence in the story. Consequently, based on this information and the official trailer, Borderlands is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated sci-fi films of the year. Hopefully, the movie itself is as good as the trailer makes it out to be.

3 Alien: Romulus

August 16, 2024

Alien: Romulus

Alien: Romulus is the seventh film in the Alien franchise. The movie is directed by Fede Álvarez and will focus on a new young group of characters who come face to face with the terrifying Xenomorphs. Alien: Romulus is a stand-alone film and takes place in a time not yet explored in the Alien franchise.

Release Date
August 16, 2024

Director
Fede Alvarez

Cast
Cailee Spaeny , David Jonsson , Archie Renaux , Isabela Merced , Aileen Wu , Spike Fearn

Writers
Fede Alvarez , Rodo Sayagues

The Alien franchise has (unfortunately) been hit or miss since the first two movies, with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant both receiving mixed reviews. The upcoming installment is the first since Alien: Resurrection not directed by Ridley Scott, who will instead be producing the 2024 sci-fi horror film Alien: Romulus. Fede Álvarez directed the ninth installment in the Alien franchise, and the cast includes Priscilla star Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu.

The plot of Alien: Romulus revolves around a group of young space colonizers who come across a terrifying alien life form in an abandoned space station. Not much else is known about the upcoming sci-fi horror movie’s story. However, Alien: Romulus‘s place on the Alien franchise timeline is between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986).

2 Sonic The Hedgehog 3

December 20, 2024

The Sonic the Hedgehog movies have been surprisingly successful so far, with growing anticipation for the third installment due to Shadow the Hedgehog joining the franchise in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The popular character was hinted at in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 post-credits scene and will likely be the antagonist of the third chapter. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 veers into sci-fi territory, with Jeff Fowler returning to direct the film.

Production on
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
began in November 2023 and ended in March 2024.

Jim Carrey is returning as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and other cast members include Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Miles “Tails” Prower, Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, and Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski. The voice actor of Shadow the Hedgehog is unknown, though. Perhaps the studio wants to keep that a secret or their identity will be revealed as Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s premiere date gets closer.

1 The Electric State

Unknown date in 2024

Following the mixed reviews of Adam Sandler’s Spaceman, Netflix has another major 2024 sci-fi release — The Electric State. The Electric State is a film adaptation of Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel of the same name. Anthony and Joe Russo, the minds behind numerous successful Marvel films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame, directed the upcoming movie (which doesn’t have a release date yet as of the writing of this article).

The plot of
The
Electric State
revolves around a girl and a robot setting out to find her missing brother.

The Electric State has an enormously talented cast, including Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Brian Cox, Giancarlo Esposito, Anthony Mackie, and more. Some stars (like Esposito and Mackie) voice the various robot characters in The Electric State. Meanwhile, actors like Brown, Pratt, and Quan play humans in the 2024 sci-fi movie.
