Original How To Train Your Dragon Star Shares His Advice For Live-Action Reboot Cast

Original How to Train Your Dragon star Jay Baruchel offers advice to the cast members of the forthcoming live-action reboot of the animated fantasy film. Loosely based on Cressida Cowell’s book series, this animated franchise first began in 2010 with the release of the eponymous opener, which introduced audiences to the mythical village of Berk along with its inhabitants and dragons. Following the huge success of the first movie, two follow-ups were released in 2014 and 2019 respectively, and in early 2023, it was announced that a live-action reboot film was in the works.

Now, in a recent interview with Screen Rant for his new movie Humane, Baruchel, who voiced lead character Hiccup in the original trilogy, advises the cast of the live-action How to Train Your Dragon to enjoy all the adventure that comes with making the film. He also has specific notes for those riding Hiccup’s beloved dragon, Toothless. Read his full comments below:

I know that those kids hopefully have a good adventure in store for them. And for any of the people getting to ride on Toothless, just respect the dragon and he’ll respect you, and just enjoy it, because it’s not every day that you get to be part of something that people give a s–t about across the world, and will take with them their entire lives. That’s a pretty profound, special thing, so yeah, just have a blast.

Since How to Train Your Dragon first debuted in 2010, the animated franchise has gone on to produce two other successful feature films, five short films, television shows, and a number of video games and comic books. Taking into account how the franchise has steadily grown over the years, it came as no surprise when it was announced in February 2023 that a live-action reboot was going to be added to its varied and ever-growing installments.

Following the announcement, a release date of March 2025 was initially set for the movie. However, following the WGA and then SAG-AFTRA strikes, the production of the movie was delayed, and a rescheduled release date of June 13, 2025 was subsequently confirmed. The movie is expected to mirror the story of the franchise’s first installment closely, reenacting Hiccup’s encounter with his Night Fury, Toothless, and the training process and bond that the two eventually go on to share.

Regarding the cast for the upcoming How to Train Your Dragon, it has been confirmed that fast-rising actor Mason Thames will star as Hiccup while Gerard Butler, who voiced Hiccup’s father Stoick the Vast, will be reprising his role. Nico Parker will take on the part of the female lead, Astrid. Along with these three, it has also been confirmed that other stars like Nick Frost, Gabriel Howell, Harry Trevaldwyn, Julian Dennison and Bronwyn James will also be appearing in this highly anticipated live-action remake.
