Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently teased his holiday action movie, Red One, with behind-the-scenes images and a wild description. The former professional wrestler is no stranger to over-the-top action movies. His first major role came in the 2002 The Mummy spinoff film, The Scorpion King, as the titular character. Although he quickly proved himself a versatile actor with a lauded performance in the Get Shorty sequel, Be Cool, Johnson became a staple in the action genre with films like Race to Witch Mountain, Hercules, and the Fast & Furious franchise. Johnson’s most recently starred as the DCU anti-hero, Black Adam, in the blockbuster film of the same name.
Johnson took to social media to tease his new holiday-themed action movie, Red One. The actor shared several behind-the-scenes images of himself as his character, Callum Drift, filming on a studio set. Along with the images, Johnson gave a wild description of the film’s plot explaining that the movie is a “fresh new take on Christmas lore” while likening the movie to Jumanji mixed with Miracle on 34th Street, Hobbs & Shaw, Harry Potter, and It’s a Wonderful Life. What Could Red One Be About?
Based on Johnson’s description, Red One sounds like an absolute over-the-top movie with a bombastic high concept plot. This is nothing new for the actor as his filmography is filled with such films, however, the Christmas theme allows the movie to stand out in his long resume as he has yet to star in the genre. With little information regarding the movie’s plot released, all audiences can do is speculate.
Many Christmas and holiday-themed films tend to focus on the love of family, including Home Alone, Jingle All the Way, and Johnson’s favorite Christmas film, It’s a Wonderful Life. But also hope and belief, as seen in both Miracle on 34th Street and Harry Potter. However, with the film falling in the action genre, Hobbs & Shaw seems to be an appropriate comparison, especially with Chris Evans attached to co-star. The two may feature in a buddy cop-style dynamic, begrudgingly working together but bickering along the way.
Most peculiar is Johnson’s reference to Jumanji in his plot description. Since it is the first film on his list, the movie may hold the most weight in relevance. As Jumanji features characters jumping from one world into another, or vice versa, Red One will likely have the main character thrust into the Christmas world, a realm that is far more complex and dangerous than anyone could imagine. With J.K. Simmons starring as Santa Claus and Bonnie Hunt as Mrs. Claus, Johnson appears to be diving headfirst into the Christmas spirit with guns blazing when Red One lands on Amazon Prime Video during the 2023 holiday season.
