Two suspects were apprehended this week after an attempted abduction in the parking lot of West Virginia’s Wheeling Island Casino. The victims were held at gunpoint.

The suspects initially broke into a parked car at the gaming property on Tuesday evening, police said. They then allegedly tried to kidnap a woman from the vehicle.

The suspects later aimed a gun at the woman and a second victim outside of the car, Wheeling police said.

The victims both were able to flee. Neither was injured.

The suspects were later apprehended by police. The two were identified as Duwan Malik Groover, 43, and Susan Irene Coryell, 37, both of Wheeling, according to WTRF, a local TV station.

Groover is charged with two counts of robbery, two counts of first-degree sexual assault, and a single count of attempted abduction. Coryell is charged with two counts of accessory before the fact of robbery.

Both suspects were booked at the Northern Regional Jail. During a court appearance later in the week, a magistrate set bail at $300,000 for Groover and $50,000 for Coryell.

Also, the duo was linked to the assault of a woman and man in an East Wheeling residence, also on Tuesday evening, police said.

More charges could be brought against the two suspects, WTRF said. It is unclear what the details were on the sexual assault charge against Groover.

Kidnappings have taken place at other casinos nationwide.

Illinois Apprehension

For instance, earlier this month, two men were arrested after they allegedly robbed a third man at Illinois’s Rivers Casino Des Plaines parking lot. The bandits stole the victim’s money, cellphone, and keys.

Before the incident was over, the victim also was forced to ride in his car, a Toyota Prius, while one of the bandits drove the vehicle.

The suspects, Curtis Rollins, 31, of Evanston, Ill., and Kadeem Burton, 32 of Chicago, were later arrested for aggravated kidnapping and aggravated vehicular hijacking, according to Journal & Topics Media Group, a regional news organization.

Rollins and Burton both allegedly searched the victim’s pockets. They stole $1,900 that was found in his wallet, police said.

After the duo ordered the victim to sit down in the passenger seat of the Prius, Rollins began driving the car.

The car was driven a short distance to a nearby parking lot. Rollins then fled from the vehicle.

Philippines Shootout With Kidnappers

In the Philippines, police killed four Chinese men in May 2022 after they allegedly kidnapped another Chinese national who was in the country to work at a casino. When the police descended on the criminals’ hideout, a shootout ensued, leading to the deaths, the South China Morning Post reported.

Police approached the kidnappers’ hideout in Lapu Lapu. They had tracked down the suspects who had received a partial ransom payment through WeChat.

The kidnappers began firing at police. The officers retaliated, taking down the suspects. The casino worker was rescued.
