Has Mike Flanagan Become Hollywood’s Go-To Stephen King Director?

Countless Directors Have Tried Their Hand At King’s Works Over The Years.

However, among the extraordinarily long list of directors who have tried adapting King’s works, Flanagan is quickly proving himself one of the most adept at honoring the source material while also putting his own spin on the author’s words.

As one of the world’s most prolific authors whose written works have been adapted into film and television projects dozens of times, King is no stranger to seeing his words brought to life by a long succession of directors. Not only has the author’s work been adapted by the likes of well-known directors such as Brian De Palma, Stanley Kubrick, and John Carpenter, but he is also notorious for his recently discontinued “Dollar Baby” program which allowed aspiring filmmakers to adapt one of his short stories for $1.

However, among the extraordinarily long list of directors who have tried adapting King’s works, Flanagan is quickly proving himself one of the most adept at honoring the source material while also putting his own spin on the author’s words. Not only have Flanagan’s previous King movies both attracted favorable critical responses, but King even praised the director’s work on Doctor Sleep for helping to change his mind about Kubrick’s version of The Shining, which King famously hates.

Flanagan not only adapted King’s
Doctor Sleep,
but did so as a direct sequel to the 1980 version of
The Shining
and embraced the many changes Kubrick made to King’s story.

Moreover, while the director’s latest news concerning The Life of Chuck suggests that his work on his next King movie is largely done, he is still not finished bringing the author’s written works to the screen. With Flanagan also planning on rebooting The Dark Tower as a television series, his name will continue to be associated with King’s works for many more years to come. Meanwhile, with the praise The Life of Chuck’s cast is currently heaping on his latest movie, there is a chance that Flanagan could be responsible for delivering one of the best Stephen King movies yet.
