One of the many things that President Theodore Roosevelt would be recognized for was taming the mighty Colorado River. Since 2000, the water levels in Lake Mead have been dropping steadily. However, after years of drought and disappointment, Lake Mead is suddenly doing something that has yet to be done in a long time. What is happening to Lake Mead, and why is the water level dropping? So Let’s Talk About The Lake Mead
Despite being one of the seven wonders of the natural world, the Grand Canyon National Park was carved out over millions of years by erosion and other natural forces; it is topped on either end by enormous artificial landscapes constructed in less than two decades. On the border between Arizona and Nevada, near the southwest corner of Grand Canyon National Park, the Colorado River empties into Lake Mead, one of the biggest lakes in the country. After Hoover Dam (formerly known as Boulder Dam) was finished in 1935, it started to fill. Hoover Dam was built in less than five years and was the biggest hydroelectric dam in the world. About 30 miles east of Las Vegas, it crosses the Colorado River in Black Canyon.
Elwood Mead, the commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation at the time, was honoured with the name Lake Mead for the reservoir made possible by damming the Colorado River. Thousands of tourists flocked to this fantastic juxtaposition of desert and water due to the recently constructed Lake. In 1964, Lake Mead National Recreation Area was established as the initial national recreation area. Millions of people visit the park each year to take advantage of its various recreational possibilities and diversified terrain.
